Located just over 12 km (ca. 7.5 miles) southeast of Rome’s city centre, the airport is connected to the city and the rest of Italy via the Greater Ring Road (GRA), the A90/E80 motorway that surrounds Greater Rome.
Numerous car rental companies provide affordable car hire rates and have their offices at the airport, where customers can return their cars at the end of the hire period, take the free shuttle bus back to the terminal and depart on their return flight home.
The airport also has its own small railway station, which links the airport with the mainline train station in central Rome. Various bus operators provide onward travel into the city and a designated transfer service connects Ciampino with Leonardo da Vinci, Rome’s second airport.
Some airport buses leave for Ciampino railway station from where passengers can board trains to Rome’s main train station. Other bus services take passengers directly to the main train station Roma Termini in central Rome.
COTRAL/Schiaffina buses leave every 15 minutes from the Anagnina stop of Metro Line A to travel to Ciampino. Bus operators Terravision Ltd, Schiaffini and the official Bus Shuttle transport passengers in around 40 minutes from Roma Termini, the main train station in the city, to the airport.
The taxi rank is located just outside the arrivals terminal. An average trip by taxi into the city centre will cost between EUR 35.00 to EUR 40.00. A trip from the Aurelian Walls costs EUR 30.00; while the fare from Ostiense Station to Ciampino is also EUR 30.00, a trip from Tiburtina Station costs EUR 35.00. The transfer from Leonardo da Vinci Fiumcino Airport costs EUR 50.00. The City of Rome municipal officials set the cost of taxi journeys for the airport route in the cost includes luggage and up to 4 passengers.
Destinations other the ones above will be determined by the taximeter and a fee for luggage will be added. All City of Rome official taxis are white and carry an illuminated “TAXI” sign on their car roof as well as a licence number on the doors, the back and on the inside of the vehicle.
Ciampino Città is the nearest train station to the airport. A ticket for the bus from this small train station to the airport costs EUR 1.00 per person and the bus leaves every 30 minutes for its 5 minute journey to the airport.
From Rome passengers can take the surface light rail train system from Rome Termini train station to Ciampino Città. The journey takes just 15 minutes by metro train.
As mentioned above, the airport lies within the limits of the GRA and is therefore connected to all parts of Rome and beyond the city limits to the rest of Italy. From the Via di Fioranello motorists should head towards the SS7 (the Via Appia Nuova), which links via the access road Via Mario Mameli with the airport buildings and terminals.
